Research Purpose: Develop high-performance computing simulation codes for molecular-level desalination and de-pollution techniques.Problem Statement: The World Health Organization (WHO) in conjunction with UNICEF reported in 2017 that close to 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water. The humanitarian consequences are far-ranging, from one newborn dying every minute to hundreds of millions of lost school days because of water-related illnesses. Researchers have proposed methods that rely on computing simulations to design molecular-level desalination and de-pollution techniques that are significantly faster and less expensive than traditional water purification technologies. Nevertheless, there exists a bottleneck in preparing computer scientists to develop codes for extreme high-performance computing (HPC) workloads in general. This project proposes to conduct such training in two parts, Project 1 and Project 2. Project 1 concerns extending NVIDIA GPU codes that have been initially developed and tested by Prof. Ron Coleman. Their purpose is to accelerate a massively parallel, turn-based game simulation, BCG, through reinforcement learning using NVIDIA’s compute unified device architecture (or CUDA). This first Project 1 provides the base for Project 2. It is intended to develop codes for the molecular-level desalination and de-pollution simulations.

The purpose of this fellowship is to researchthe best method for developing and providing exercises in a comprehensive suite correlated tothe current Introduction to Cybersecurity syllabus.Research:• Research general Computer Science educational methodologies• Review Professor Tokash’s two EXISTING activities (information hidden in a picture; a web pagewith confidential information in comments)• Review the current Intro to Cybersecurity textbook to determine required supporting activities• Research currently available web-based activities for possible inclusion and/or modification• Research AWS client/server infrastructure to be used as an ultimate solution to problemImplementation:• Develop a web-based suite of activities correlated to the CMPT_416 syllabus• Develop code for an AWS-hosted application, including index and more web pages as needed• Develop unique activities tailored to CMPT_416 syllabuso Develop code to provide challenge exercises▪ Example one: write code for a web page that demonstrates SQL injection▪ Example two: write code that illustrates Caesar Ciphers• Develop a client/server application with links to existing activities for any instructor• Produce an instructor’s manual providing description and solution for each exercise• Develop instructions for maintenance and support of the code
