As a newly graduated Social Service Worker, my journey through this field has been transformative and profoundly enriching. From overcoming language barriers and adapting to a new cultural environment during my first placement to developing and honing my counselling and interviewing skills at Oshawa Senior Community Centres 55+ (OSCC55+), I have evolved into a confident and passionate professional dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of those I serve. Working with differently-abled individuals taught me the importance of patience, empathy, and effective communication. My experiences in my education and placement allowed me to gain invaluable client interviewing, counselling, listening, communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills. I believe in the power of compassion, understanding, and resilience, and social service work is a calling to support and uplift those in need. I am passionate about counselling and committed to enhancing the well-being of individuals, particularly older people and those who are differently abled. As I embark on my professional journey, I am excited about the future and the opportunities to make a lasting impact. The skills and experiences I have gained will enable me to contribute meaningfully to social service work.
