My current work focuses on developing new services for the care of chronic disease and new approaches towards managing clinical and financial risk in the healthcare market.Overall, my interests include including improving healthcare productivity, new payment models, optimizing workforce utilization, and improving the quality and efficiency of care. Until recently, I was a medical scientist at IBM Research where my work focused on the use of data analytics and information technology to modernize healthcare. At IBM I was the lead research clinician for IBM’s artificial intelligence computing system, Watson—famous for its victories on the quiz show Jeopardy! My work centered on adapting the Watson technology to clinical practice and the healthcare industry. After finishing my medical training in internal medicine, I completed the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program at UCLA, earning my PhD. My dissertation research focused on biomedical informatics and health services research. Prior, I have worked in the Internal Medicine department at UCLA and as a research scientist at the RAND Corporation. I've provided expertise to the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Institute of Medicine as well as briefing Congressional Staff on healthcare. I served on a working group of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, coauthoring its 2010 policy report, “Realizing the Full Potential of Health Information Technology.” I speak regularly on a range of healthcare thought leadership topics and have had the pleasure of speaking at TedMed's first event in Italy: http://www.tedmedlivebologna.com/portfolio/basit-chaudhry_en/
