He was named by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the “100 Leading Global Thinkers” and TIME Magazine named him one of the “100 most influential people in the world” in 2013.Following the 18 day protests of the Jan. 25 revolution in Egypt, Bassem created the political satire show, The B+ Show on YouTube, commenting on the political events and how the mainstream media presented them. Shot in Bassem’s laundry room, the weekly 5 minute episodes grew to 5 million weekly viewers in three months. Following this success, Bassem launched Al-Bernameg (The Program) in partnership with the Egyptian TV channel, ONTV, which lasted for 3 seasons with a record 40 million viewers. The second season, which premiered in November 2012 on CBC network, was the first real live audience show in Egypt. Four years later and with the country under military rule, Youssef decided to cancel the show, due to the series of threats to him and his family.Bassem is the first and only success story of Internet to TV conversion in the Middle East; andAl Bernameg’s YouTube channel was the first channel in the Middle East and North African region to reach 1 million subscribers.Bassem recently hosted the International Emmy Awards and completed a residency at Harvard.He recently relocated to San Francisco to complete a fellowship at Stanford University.
