For my Bachelor thesis I and my co-student got the opportunity to set up an evaluation method for the endothermic animal collection as a first step in setting up an Institutional Collection Plan (ICP). This evaluation exists out of three pillars: Conservation, Education and Research and gives a score between 0-100 per species. Combined with a factsheet (nuance form) per species, the method gives a full evaluation. The method can directly be applied to the rest of the animal collection and can be used to support the dicision making process for the future collection. The evaluation method has a close link to EAZA's new style EEPs and the Regional Collection Plans (RCPs).

This is the biggest research internship for my master Behavioural Ecology. During thisstudy I aim to evaluate the succes of a welfare management plan for a zoo housed herd of Asian elephants. The management plan has three phases: 1. Social management; 2. Husbandry regime; 3. Diet and feeding enrichment. The goal of this plan is to stimulate natural behaviours an reducese stress and abnormal behaviours.

Comparative behavioural research on the two chimpanzees groups in the safaripark (see also my project: 'Rest and Restlessness at the Chimpanzees of Beekse Bergen.') During my internship with the Head Zookooper of the Great Apes and Carnivores, I got the opportunity to assist in multiple animal transports and veterinary procedures. I learned a lot about every day animal and zoo management, by talking to staff members and zoo keepers. In addition I worked in zookeeping of the Great Apes (Gorilla's, Chimpansees, Hamadryas baboons and Lar Gibbons) and African Elephants.

Daily responsibility for the full animal care of the park, amongst others camels, coatis and scarlet ibises. This included supervising the animal care volunteers. I was also asked to assist in animal-related issues, such as collection management, enclosure design, animalwelfare and law & policy.

Updating or compiling the animal care and safety protocols of the highly dangerous/ category 1 animals within the KMDA (Zoo Antwerp and Zoo Planckendael). Amongst others protocols for the great apes, asisan elephants and big cats.I learned a lot about practical animal management and the management of the KMDA.
