The Edgar Fellows initiative was developed by former Governor Jim Edgar to provide emerging leaders in Illinois public policy with lessons, inspiration, and training in statesmanship and current issues while fostering and nurturing relationships that cross regional, political, and personal experience boundaries. Started in 2012, the program teaches leadership skills and stresses the importance of problem-solving instead of political expedience when addressing the state’s issues and opportunities.

o Served as the chancellor’s liaison to the SIU Board of Trustees, SIU System Office, and senior campus executives to ensure the effective operations of a $625M organization by aligning decisions with the chancellor’s vision and the campus’s strategic plan. o Worked across teams to manage business matters affecting more than 11,000 students and 5,000 employees, with operations spread throughout Illinois and the United States. o Independently managed a portfolio of three direct reports (Events/Outreach, Public Broadcasting, and Head Start) with 150+ employees and a $8M budget.o Guided complex, strategic cross-functional initiatives ranging from creating a new university strategic plan to solving business process deficiencies.o Served as point person on a radical leadership transformation, handling the transitioning out of senior executives and recruiting and onboarding of more than 50 administrators.o Crafted position descriptions, designed recruitment plans, engaged search firms, established search committees, created interview schedules, and hosted finalists for on-campus visits. o Reviewed and overhauled dozens of policies and business practices while embracing innovative initiatives that achieved historic enrollment outcomes in the fall of 2023.o Served as a senior adviser in crisis management responses.o Maintained open communication with staff at all levels, including trusted advisor relationships with senior campus executives and their teams across campus. o Wrote and edited memos, emails, public statements, campus messages, and other information for or on behalf of the chancellor to internal and external audiences.o Coordinated large-scale space planning, utilization, renovation, and construction with the university facilities management team and other senior leaders.o Communicated directly with elected officials, government entities, media, community partners, and stakeholders to represent the university’s interests.

Worked with the institute founder and others to establish a new campus unit that included a major fundraising drive and hosting of high-profile events, including hallmarks such as: o Creating and implementing action plans and strategies that raised more than $10 million in endowment funds, surpassing Senator Simon’s goal. o Securing the largest single gift to the institute from an alumnus whose estate left more than $3 million to the university. o Served as the primary point person for visits by Barbara Bush, Walter Cronkite, Coretta Scott King and scores of other dignitaries in politics, media and entertainment. Hired as a development officer and added event management and budget duties. Eventually was named assistant director and then associate director. Served as interim director briefly in 2008-2009.
