Dr. Bammes has a broad background in business, science, and theology. He graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Engineering. He and his wife, Stephanie, then moved to Houston, Texas, where Benjamin earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics from Baylor College of Medicine, under the mentorship of US National Academy of Sciences member Dr. Wah Chiu. His graduate research focused on electron microscopy (EM), including specimen radiation damage, characterization of new cameras, development of microscope automation software, and development of image processing algorithms for cryo-EM.In 2011, Benjamin continued this research trajectory at Direct Electron, the start-up company that pioneered direct detection cameras for electron microscopy nearly 15 years ago. He was quickly promoted from an applications scientist to Director of Applications & Marketing, where he helped successfully launch several new camera systems across multiple market segments. In 2018, he shifted roles to become Director of Research and Development, where he successfully guided the completion of the ultra-fast Apollo and Celeritas camera systems, the DE-FreeScan scan controller, and new GPU-based data acquisition and processing software. He has also successfully led multiple small business innovation research (SBIR) projects from both the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition to his full workload at Direct Electron, Benjamin also occasionally performs science, technology, and business consulting services for other companies. Benjamin is also enthusiastic about the life-changing truths that God has communicated to us through the Bible. He loves the beautiful coherence between science and the Bible and is always wanting to learn more about both science and theology. Fully convinced of the historical reality and eternal impact of Jesus's life, death, and resurrection--saving all who trust in Him--Benjamin is always eager to listen, think about questions, and discuss with anyone curious about these things. In 2015, Benjamin and his wife Stephanie became part-time pastors at LifePoint Church in Pearland, Texas. At LifePoint, Benjamin preaches several times each year, assists with sermon planning, and develops Bible study curriculum. He is also part of the musical worship team. Benjamin lives in a suburb on the south side of Houston with his wife and their four energetic children. In their spare time, they like to read, play/watch sports, travel, and hike through National Parks.
