I am an ambitious young investigator using neural engineering to restore gastrointestinal function and treat disorders of gut-brain interaction. My research fills the niche between neural engineering and neurogastroenterology, focusing on electrical stimulation as a therapy for gastrointestinal disorders. I work on translational science with the objective to restore function, manage symptoms, and improve the quality of life for people living with gastrointestinal disorders. Secondary to my research endeavors are to train the next generation of scientists and engineers. By leveraging diverse skillsets and expertise across disciplines, I try to maximize likelihood of success of our translational research goals.For almost 10 years, I have studied the enteric nervous system that regulates gastrointestinal function. After earning my BS in biological engineering in three years from Cornell University, I completed my PhD in biomedical engineering at Duke University under Warren M. Grill, PhD. My dissertation, A BIDIRECTIONAL SWITCH TO TREAT COLONIC DYSMOTILITY, focused on electrical stimulation of the colon and the sacral nerves to increase or decrease specifically colonic motility. I am expertly trained in mathematical models of neuromuscular networks, and in ex vivo isolated colon, anesthetized, and chronic animal models.
