About Ben Bornstein
Ben Bornstein is the deputy manager for the JPL Autonomous Systems Division and has over 24 years of JPL experience developing both flight and ground instrument software, electronic ground support equipment, mission operations, and ground and science data processing systems from inception to operations.Ben has held positions as manager of the JPL Instrument Electronics and Software Section, the group supervisor for the Architecture and Systems Engineering Group in the JPL Instrument Software and Science Data Systems Section, and the Mission System manager for both OCO-3 (http://oco.jpl.nasa.gov) and ECOSTRESS (http://ecostress.jpl.nasa.gov). Ben created the Advanced Multi-Mission Operations System (AMMOS) Instrument Toolkit (AIT; https://github.com/NASA-AMMOS) used by Cold Atom Lab, ECOSTRESS, EMIT, MAIA, MOXIE, OCO-3, and the Lunar IceCube cubesat. He was the data and software subject matter expert for NASA's ESSP Common Instrument Interface (CII) project. Ben was a lead for the Autonomous Exploration to Gather Increased Science (AEGIS; http://aegis.jpl.nasa.gov) project, which provides automated instrument science targeting technology for MER, MSL, and M2020. AEGIS was awarded NASA Software of the Year in 2011. Prior to that, Ben helped develop the MER onboard cloud and dust-devil detectors and led the instrument flight software and onboard autonomy software development for the Vehicle Cabin Atmosphere Monitor (VCAM) and Electronic Nose (ENose) instruments. Early in his JPL career, Ben developed genomic and proteomic databases for several Caltech biology labs and was a member of the Caltech Biological Network Modeling Center (BNMC) where he led an international collaboration to develop a now world-renowned, open-source software package to assist in the exchange and modeling of biochemical reaction networks.Ben is the recipient of JPL's People Leadership Award (twice), a NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal, and NASA Software of the Year Award.Ben is a member of the ACM, AGU, ICSB, IEEE, and received a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota in 1999.
