I create things.Sometimes - even often - I create teams. Sometimes I create products, projects, and processes. In the last decades, those were software engineering teams. I would create them, I would lead them, I would find leaders and step away. Depending on the situation.Now, I've got the time to smell the roses a bit. I'm finding bay area art projects that could use a little help. Sometimes doing and building actual things, not teams.I'm working on my personal practices - music, fitness - as well as creating art. There's a lot to do.*** old professional profileI find in many companies that Engineering Leadership is equated with Management. This often leads teams, and companies, astray. Engineering leadership is multi-faceted, and is different for each company, each strategic opportunity. Sometimes leadership is helping a team of tech leads and architects come together and form a common language and solution. Sometimes it's providing a bridge between business leaders and engineering leads. Sometimes the bridge is with product, marketing, or sales - or all of the above. Engineering Managers, Directors, and VPs are often in the role of doing each of these. Often they do tolerably - it's an unwritten requirement of an engineering management role - but often they do not have the time to do the job well, and sometimes they do not have the experienceMy experience in this role is This role has been called "CTO", "Member of CTO Staff", or "Senior Engineer". At "Meta", my specality was "cross-org XFN", which leveraged my ability to communicate compellingly across a wide range of disciplines. My broad industry experience usually gives me foundational understanding of a team's problems, even when a team is building true "0 to 1" technology.The role requires ability to rapidly learn from the domain experts in an organization, and provide them the help - be it communication, information, or advice - to succeed. I measure my success by the success of the people around me.Right now, I'm taking time off from the standard default engineering world. I'll be working on art and music projects that follow my passions, and learning some technology I care very much about. I am not looking for a fulltime position, and may never again
