Intellectual and thought leadership of the Indonesia component of the USAID-funded RAFT program with a $1M budget and a team of 25 staff to successfully impact government forest policies, and develop tools for concession clients to enhance revenues from nature-based solutions.2). Developed and executed project strategies with program partners, resulting in the establishment of Indonesia's Forest Legality Standard (i.e. SVLK), voluntary national guidelines for identifying High Conservation Values, and the RIL-C improved forest management Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology.3). Successfully led teams to design, develop, and implement TNC’s natural forest management vision resulting in the development of the jurisdictional Berau Forest Carbon Program, and FSC certification of >five natural forest concession companies with a collective forest area of more than 500,000 ha.

Designed, developed, and managed TNC’s Improved Forest Management (IFM) program strategy across four program offices on a budget of $1.3 million and a staff of 15, aligning with TNC’s “2015 Goal” to conserve key ecoregions and biodiversity in East Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi.2). Recruited five natural forest concessions into TNC’s IFM program, resulting in improved forest management over >250,000 ha of natural tropical forest.3). Partnership identification, relationship cultivation, and management which subsequently became the basis for the $6M Responsible Asia Forest and Trade program partnership with WWF, Tropical Forest Foundation, Tropical Forest Trust, and RECOFTC.4). Established working relationships with the Ministry of Forestry to promote sustainable forest management, and forest certification, and successfully transitioned the TNC/URS Legality Standard for Indonesia over to the Indonesian Ecolabelling Institute (LEI) for continued development and alignment within the Ministry of Forestry.

Expanded, trained, and managed a staff of ten to deliver FSC forest support programs to seven natural forest concessions in Sumatra and Kalimantan, resulting in improved management of 500,000 ha of natural tropical forest, and FSC certification of two concessions.2). Development of FSC certification action plans to support concession members in achieving FSC forest management and chain of custody certification resulting in the sale of >100,000 m3 of tropical timber to TFT member garden furniture manufacturing industries in Java.3). Successful piloting of the TracElite timber tracking system for logs originating from two natural forest concessions.4). Project management of the Dutch Timber Trade Federation funded scoping study of 12 plywood factories and 18 woodworking industries across Indonesia, resulting in the development of Woodworking and Ply Mill Action Plans to meet Dutch timber legality requirements, while also contributing to an industry shift in Indonesia’s national timber tracking and legality systems.

Recruitment, training, and management of five Indonesian FSC certification experts into TFT’s natural forest management program, resulting in the recruitment of four natural forest concessions covering some 350,000 ha in East and Central Kalimantan.2). Development of FSC certification action plans to support concession members in achieving FSC forest management and chain of custody certification, resulting in the sale of >50,000 m3 of Bengkirai logs to TFT member industries in Vietnam and Java; 3). Project management of donor-funded activities (The Nature Conservancy, International Tropical Timber Organisation, and The Doen Foundation) to complete FSC gap assessments, train companies in reduced impact logging, and complete social and biodiversity baseline studies, collectively delivering >USD 150,000 in value to TFT concession members.4). Project management of the UK Timber Trade Federation funded scoping study of 13 plywood factories and three woodworking industries across Indonesia, resulting in the development of Woodworking and Ply Mill Action Plans to meet UK timber legality requirements, while also creating an industry shift in Indonesia’s national timber tracking and legality systems.

Contributed to ProForest’s expansion of the definition of High Conservation Value Forest, a concept that is now applied broadly across multiple industries and sectors around the world.

Successful management of 20-person field crews to complete a 100-ha timber inventory, resulting in the quantification of standing timber across an 8,000-ha area of peat swamp forest.3). Mapping and quantification of timber harvested by illegal logging crews over an 8,000-ha area of peat swamp forest, resulting in the joint development of a peer-reviewed publication.4). Development and submission of a grant proposal for community-based environmental awareness to the Department for International Development, resulting in the successful award of GBP 20,000.
