Software Engineer, Android
MOBILE DEVELOPMENT• Lead Android development for the Scanaflo Urine team as the sole Android developer.• Reduced memory issues in legacy code by performing a complete refactoring of the code while adhering to Android best practices.• Reduced code duplication by modularizing the core data algorithm into a stand-alone Java library that was used by both the Android mobile device and the Java backend server to process images.• Improved code reliability through unit tests with over 90% code coverage of the core algorithm.• Enabled REST calls with OAuth2 using modern libraries such as Retrofit and RxJava.• Simplified code architecture using proven methods such as dependency injection (Dagger2), eventbuses, and MVP.BACKEND DEVELOPMENT• Implemented core Java algorithm, including machine learning and regression techniques, to process images.• Designed and set up PostgreSQL database for efficient storage and querying of big datasets.• Developed analysis tools in Python that directly utilized the database to perform routine analysis on incoming data. • Created tools in R and Shiny that aided in algorithm development by allowing for 3D visualization of the data, which led to significant improvements in locating, understanding, and resolving problem regions in the data.
Graduate Student Researcher
My research was aimed at improving electrochemical energy storage devices such as batteries and pseudocapacitor. We took an unconventional approach of using an individual carbon nanotube (CNT) to investigate the fundamental limitations of batteries. Measuring a battery composed of a single CNT -- 1 billionth the size of traditional batteries -- is extremely difficult; however, it allowed us to precisely quantify our working system and understand the limitations that have prevented batteries from achieving higher energies, powers, and lifetimes. Our simplified system has led to a new understanding of the limitations and failures in batteries that was not previously possible with the ensemble averages measured in bulk devices. Furthermore, it provided a guideline for overcoming those limitations.Professional Accomplishments:• Built suite of graphical user interfaces in LabVIEW to aid in nearly every aspect of research -- from controlling hardware, visualizing real time data, performing persistent data storage, and automating routine experiments.• Led successful collaborations with groups from multiple universities which resulted in over 12 publications.• Achieved excellent technical communication and writing skills by presenting at 5 major physics conferences and authoring/co-authoring papers that were published in renowned scientific journals such as Nano Letters and Science.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Taught the discussion sections for a wide range of physics courses including Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Thermodynamics. This involved detailed explanations and solutions of course material and homework problems. Received excellent reviews from students who took my course: http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1262856
Physics Tutor
I worked with students to help them understand how to think about problems from a physics perspective. My main objective was not to explain how to solve a particular physics problem but to teach problem solving skills in general.
