In a team of 4 students we were responsible for the design and implementation of a solar water pumping system for a medical center in rural Uganda. Before, the medical center relied on rain water and ground water pumped up by hand. Now, they are equipped with a solar water pumping system, consisting of solar panels, pump and pump controller with secure lightning protection, a water tower and water distribution system. The project is worked out in close cooperation with the local community, to ensure knowledge transfer.The project consisted of an eight-month preparation during the academic year -- in-depth literature study and design, in combination with several training days on cultural awareness -- followed by a three-month period of installation and on-site education.With extra financial support awarded by VLIR-UOS Travel Grant and Municipality of Malle (Volunteer in the South)
