Executive Director

Launceston, Tas, Australia

The role of Executive Director at Design Tasmania enabled me to apply my skill as a professional designer, curator and educator to the leadership of a key regional cultural institution in Australia’s art craft and design landscape. I worked to foster relationships enabled through creative projects, with a view to changing the way we think about design leadership, practice and advocacy. My aim was to change the conversation, to build a strong and connected community around Design Tasmania with events and programmes that encourage the design-curious to get involved. My role incorporated all aspects of curatorial and operational leadership, with a particular focus on the exhibitions program. This included the design and delivery of an interim program for 2019, as well as the design and development of the artistic program plan for 2020 – 2024, and success in securing Australia Council for the Arts Four Year Funding and VACs funding for 2020 - 24, achieving an overall 20% increase on previous funding in what was a highly competitive national round. My time as leader brought about great change for the organisation in our programming and public perception. We delivered above and beyond in 'the year that was' (2020) taking more exhibitions and events online than many of our peer orgs nationally. I championed an ambitious approach to artistic programming, curating / commissioning shows such as The Form that Follows, Body Future for Mona Foma, I*conic Australian Design, PLAY for Mona Foma and The Tasmanian Salon for Denfair 2.0 with Brand Tasmania. We reinvigorated the Design Tasmania Wood Collection with a series of capsule presentations, new acquisitions and an extensive catalogue and research project supported by The Ian Potter Foundation.I fostered and extended Design Tasmania’s relationships within the Tasmanian cultural and creative sector, working with likeminded organisations on collaborative projects to support our curatorial program and expand our impact.
