Nominate, select and celebrate scientists in the Maryland area annually. Awardees receive a ACS Certificate and honored during a dinner ceremony. The awardee presents a lecture of his/her Chemistry research and writes an article for the Chesapeake Chemist (the SACS Maryland Section's Magazine). The annual celebration takes place any day during the first two weeks of December each year.

Prepare for chair in 2025. Continue active support of Events and activities of The ACS Maryland Local Section. Create new venues for the improvement and learning progress of Young Chemists. This year I will establish the first YCC committee in the ACS Maryland Local section with undergraduate Chemistry and Biochemistry Engineering students. First target UMBC.

Prepare activities related to Earth Day and Environment for scientists, professionals and the community in the Baltimore area. I organize tours of the Montebello Water Filtration Plant-I to engage the community on the chemical, biological and physical processes of water filtration and purification. Students from universities, colleges and high schools in the area had benefit from these tours. Scientific posters relating the content of these tours and STEM have been presented at ACS National Meetings.

Http://beatricesalazarusncocoordinator.webs.comI coordinate the US National Chemistry Olympiad, USNCO in the Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society, ACS. This yearly event prepares the best high school chemistry students to participate in chemistry competitions. The process includes a Maryland local exam, nomination to participate in the USNCO, nomination to attend Chemistry Camp and a final nomination to participate in the International Chemistry Olympiad, IChO. Every year four students among more than a thousand participants represent USA in this challenging competition, they travel to the country where the competition is held; in 2018 the IChO will be held in Praga, Poland.

Councilors of The Maryland Local Section of the American Chemical Society are part of the governing body of the society. We represent the Maryland Local Section as voting Councilors, we act as an advisory body in matters pertaining to the general management of the Society. We are elected for a three year term, during the second year we become involved in ACS committees, the driving forces of the ACS.

I continue being active in many of the activities of the ACS Maryland LS. This year, I have two new challenges as Member at Large and as Editor of our magazine. The ACS Maryland LS has a new website, it has the Chesapeake Chemist Newsletter link in the menu located in the website's first page, http://www.acsmaryland.org. The first issue of 2020 will be available in February. I am looking forward to young chemists to send articles, comments or publications, it will be a pleasure to select some of them and publish them in our newsletter.

She has 19 years’ experience teaching chemistry, physics and technology in high school, first in Philadelphia and later in Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) where she also served as teacher mentor for 10 years. She has served the ACS Maryland section as chair, vice-chair and chair elect as well as member at large for several years and has served as coordinator of various outreach programs of the Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society. Statement: Beatrice will represent Maryland scientists and advocate for their career advancement as councilor of ACS MD. She has shown lots of enthusiasm and initiative while serving the ACS Maryland section in different capacities. In the past two years she presented chemical education related posters at ACS national meetings in an effort to bring awareness of the role of chemistry in public health and the role of ACS members in spreading the knowledge of chemistry to the community; this can be taught within the context of multidisciplinary areas, STEM.As councilor, working with ACS colleagues, students, and ACS staff to enhance opportunities to younger scientists and members, she would emphasize three initiatives:1. Strengthen the relationship between ACS local section and ACS at the national level 2. Provide strong support for members' initiatives3. Enhance our public profile and continue to advocate for science within the community

As a Chair Elect my responsibilities include:1. Work closely with Chair and Vice-Chair in organizing monthly meetings and in providing written correspondence to speakers and institutions. Attend monthly meetings, events, quarterly Executive Committee meetings and communicate regularly with Vice-Chair and Chair.2. Succeed to Vice-Chair in January 1st or if Vice-Chair is unable to fulfill his/her term. Act in place of Vice-Chair (as Program Chair from January to December) whenever required and assist the Vice-Chair or Chair in their role if requested.3. Attend Leadership and National meetings and promote future leadership positions among existing and new members of the ACS Maryland Section.
