Mr. Doherty worked in the field of Developmental Disabilities for 46 years of which 40 were with Special Olympics Massachusetts and Connecticut before retiring as President/CEO of Connecticut. He went to Unity Enironmental University where he served on their Trustees. There are 1.2 million people doing this program in 180 countries. - Helped develop Special Olympics in Jordan.- Co led the partnership with the Ct Association of Schools and CIAC to develop Unified Sports. There are over 95% of Ct Highs Schools doing Unified Sports and 73 have earned National Recognition for their Inclusionary efforts. This is the largest number in the U.S. - Led the effort to host the 1995 Special Olympics World Games in New Haven Connecticut with 140 countries attending. - Co Chaired the North America Indigenous Peoples Initiative to recruit native people.- Led the initial effort to get ESPN and WWE to become Special Olympics World Sponsors.- Chaired the Global Unified Sports Committee for Special Olympics International and with the help of ESPN went from 500,000 to 1M athletes and partners in 3 years.-Led the effort with Health staff to gain the highest level of recognition by Special Olympics International gaining"Healthy Community"status for training health specialists how to work with the people we serve along with the large number of health screenings we do in disciplines like dentistry, podiatry, audiology, vision and physical therapy. - Chaired the S.O. North American Leadership Council of Canada, United States and the Caribbean - Grew Special Olympics Connecticut from a $1.M budget and 5,000 participants to 10,000 participants ( 14,000 prior to pandemic) who participated in 4 major Games and numerous qualifying events in 28
