In the fall of 2017, I moved from DC to my hometown of Los Angeles to work for the Mayor's Office. Specifically, I work within the Innovation Team, which acts like an internal consulting group to improve city services. During my first year our team focused on improving LAPD’s recruitment strategies. Example pilots we launched were creating a predictive model that would tell the LAPD how many of their staff were going to retire in a given fiscal year, and running randomized controlled trials testing behavioral nudges to encourage applicants to stay within the police officer hiring process. Currently we’re focused on the future of work, and creating new ways of connecting Angelenos to employment. Beyond LAPD's hiring practices and the local economy, I’ve conducted analyses on the following policy areas: animal services, gender equity, homelessness, housing, infrastructure, and more.

My studies at General Assembly lead to a contract as a teaching assistant for GA’s remote data science course for corporate clients. I was responsible for providing instructional aid as well as grading the work of over two dozen employees of the multi-national consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton.

I was promoted at the AFL-CIO to Membership Data Engineer when they recognized my experience with Python and SQL. In this role, I managed our multimillion record Oracle database that contained our client organizations’ membership data, which was critical to allowing us to campaign our members, and win electoral and legislative campaigns. During my tenure, I developed a series of membership reports for the senior staff of our client organizations, and project managed the development of a client facing Oracle APEX web portal that automated our database’s ETL processes. Additionally, I helped launch the AFL-CIO’s AWS Redshift Data Warehouse and their Periscope Dashboard, which allowed our campaign managers to view key metrics throughout our target battleground states. In the Spring of 2017, I left the AFL-CIO to study predictive analytics at General Assembly’s Data Science Immersive Program.

The AFL-CIO saw my skills in data management and promoted me to become a Voter Database Administrator. In this role I continued to maintain the organization’s voter and volunteer database (VAN), but at a national level.

After my experience as Field Organizer on the mayoral campaign for Ed Lee in San Francisco, I set a goal of working in politics at the Presidential level. The AFL-CIO was hiring Data Coordinators in battleground states to support their slate of endorsed candidates for November 2012, as well as provide capacity after the election for legislative campaigns. In this role, I was responsible for training volunteers and temporary staff on our voter and volunteer database (VAN), maintaining the database’s accuracy, and providing analysis and guidance to our campaign manager as to which voters to target.

I worked on the historic and successful campaign to elect Ed Lee as San Francisco’s first Chinese-American Mayor. As a Field Organizer, I was responsible for recruiting and coordinating campaign volunteers to assist with our voter contact efforts in the Mission, Bernal Heights and Portola neighborhoods.
