About Bec Johnson

An executive and non-exec director with experience across the healthcare, international development and non-profit sectors, now supporting organisations to solve wicked problems and drive bigger ideas of success as a consultant with Nous Group. As a co-founder and CEO at the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre, I established and grew an Australia-first organisation to support people impacted by a complex autoimmune disease, that now helps more than 2,500 families and has won multiple awards for innovation. As a project coordinator with the Red Cross, I designed, developed and rolled out a large-scale prevention program to support Pacific Islanders to adapt to climate-sensitive disease risks. As a policy and advocacy advisor, I drove action on cancer prevention and control across alcohol regulation, food marketing, therapeutic device regulation and occupational cancer risk. Director

Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Chief Executive Officer

The Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre is an Australia-first centre that supports more than 2000 families impacted by type 1 diabetes with a unique combination of clinical care, mental healthcare, education programs, peer support and advocacy. As a co-founder of the Family Centre, I developed its vision, mission and strategy, and worked with our Board to design, construct, and fit-out our purpose-built A$3M facility. Upon launch, I established its excellent clinical services, strong governance, fundraising channels, expert team, powerful brand, and impactful programs. The Family Centre has been recognised both nationally and internationally, with the Australian Diabetes Educator of the Year Award, and the Australian Charity Awards Outstanding Charity Award, as a Finalist in the Telstra Business Awards, and as one of the top 100 online communities in the world by Facebook. I have personally been recognised for my performance with a scholarship to attend Executive Education at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and with two Business News 40 under 40 Awards – the People’s Choice Award and the HBF Community/Not-for-Profit Award.

Nov 2015 - Jun 2022

Community Leadership Fellow

My Fellowship to the Facebook Community Leadership Program recognised the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre's digital health community as one of the top 100 online communities in the world. I participated in a 12-month leadership development program, starting and finishing in Silicon Valley, which involved intensive education in relation to online strategy, governance, branding, sustainability, and community development, and a funding partnership with Facebook to accelerate the Family Centre's work.

Sep 2018 - Nov 2019

Project Coordinator: Climate Change Adaptations To Protect Human Health, Western Pacific

Suva, Central, Fiji

I managed a project that assessed the risks related to climate-sensitive communicable diseases (typhoid, diarrhoea and dengue fever) across 2,500 households and ten project sites in the Fiji Islands. I designed and implemented community-based interventions to prevent disease, working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and low health literacy. The dengue resource I developed has been used in the management of multiple outbreaks across the Pacific since 2014. During the project, I was responsible for managing multiple sensitive stakeholder relationships, including with the project's funding partners, the World Health Organization, UNDP and the Global Environment Fund, local and regional Red Cross actors, and community leaders.

Sep 2012 - Oct 2013

Legal Policy Advisor

Perth, Australia

I developed legal, advocacy and policy strategies related to cancer control issues, which required a deep understanding of the law and its application to medical device regulation, obesity prevention and control policy, alcohol control, cancer screening, asbestos exposure, and occupational carcinogen exposures.

Jan 2011 - Oct 2012

Nutrition And Physical Activity Coordinator

Cancer Council Western Australia

Perth, Australia

Jun 2010 - Jan 2011

Client Service Officer

Perth, Australia

A client-focused role helping to onboard people newly-diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes into the National Diabetes Services Scheme, supporting their access to vital diabetes supplies and services. I honed my verbal communication skills in this role, and gained a deep understanding of the health consumer experience at the coalface.
