About Bec Sutton-Smith
My study in Marine Science has allowed me to obtain a wide range of skills in the marine environment and I am extremely passionate about conservation and the health of the environment. As part of my honours degree, I am undertaking research within the ecological field as part of the Ecosystem Resilience Research Group lab focusing on the native oyster to southern Australia. Findings from this research will assist with providing vital gaps in knowledge surrounding a data deficient functionally extinct species. I have been working in a regulatory body Government department for close to 20 years at Consumer & Business Services (CBS) in Adelaide, South Australia. Working within a regulatory body such as CBS requires high level of understanding in government processes and procedures. Ensuring that correct processes and policies are implemented allows to promote confidence in the community, the industry and throughout the department. As part of my current and past duties I have been required to assist in identifying gaps in knowledge, providing advice, as well as assisting with relevant changes to policies and procedures to ensure that our duties are performed efficiently and productively. I am required to make decisions that have positive impacts on efficiency and the way certain processes and tasks are undertaken. As a result, this has supported streamlined and effective processes to be implemented. My ability to interpret, relay, enforce, and educate to both external and internal stakeholders as well as the public was critical to ensuring compliance throughout the industry whilst promoting confidence to the community. I have been required to provide advice and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, Senior Management, the Director of Compliance and Enforcement and the Commissioner on compliance matters such as trends seen in the industry, education, breaches, and potential harm to the community. I have experience in risk management and audits, providing information and recommendations to ensure compliance across business needs as well as legislative requirements.
