About Becki Cox
Urbaphile, city-scapist, active traveler and recent Doctor of Urban Design.Since graduating from Birmingham University in 2009 with a BSc in Psychology, I have worked in a variety of different roles, mostly with not-for-profit organisations. I graduated with an MSc in City Planning and Real Estate Development from the University of Glasgow in December 2014 and spent a couple of years developing my experience in planning policy at Great Yarmouth Borough Council and then Birmingham City Council before coming to Living Streets as their inaugural Principal Technical Advisor. I spent 3 wonderful years managing Living Streets' involvement with the Department for Transport's LCWIP programme, as well as providing technical support to projects and individuals throughout the organisation across areas including urban design, transport planning, behaviour change and other walking related issues. I was then offered an incredible opportunity to do a full-time PhD in the very things I care most about (transport, active travel, urban design) back in beloved Glasgow. My aim continues to be to make my research as relevant and useful as possible for practitioners, whilst also learning how to be a better researcher.I have a particular interest in sustainability, equality, design, active travel, and the interesting spaces where these aspects meet. I'm a public transport geek and officianado, as well as someone who cycles often for utility purposes, sometimes for leisure and occasionally to race in triathlons. I am, at heart, a generalist, but I also like to amass specialist skills in niche areas. I have been elected to various different transport and design organisations over the years, including the Academy of Urbanism's Young Urbanists, the Urban Design Group, Women in Transport and the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation. Post-PhD, I hope to renew my involvement with some of these. I spend my spare moments walking, cycling, running, swimming, singing and writing (rarely all at once). I love Glasgow and will happily walk endlessly round just staring at streets. I'm a trustee of St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow, as well as a member of many rotas there! And I'm an Associate Member of the Iona Community, which continues to be an important part of my life.
