I provide “Advanced Life Support” (ALS) for one of the busiest fire departments in the United States. As a “Fire Service Paramedic,” (FSP), I am expected to service anyone in Philadelphia needing “Emergency Medical Services” (EMS). My primary assignment is to work on an ambulance (medic unit) and respond to 911 calls that are dispatched. This usually includes responding to homes, schools, offices, etc. Other times I am expected to suit up in heavy protective gear and provide care to people involved in highway accidents or to firefighters and people they may rescue at fire-ground operations.ALS care I provide includes CPR, ACLS, ECG interpretation, intravenous and intraosseous fluid and medication administration, manual defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, external cardiac pacing, and orotracheal intubation.The ALS care I provide is in addition to “Basic Life Support” (BLS) care, elaborated in my FSE job description.
