Vascular Plant & Bryophyte Laboratory Technologist
I sorted, weighed, dried, and identified vascular plant samples from oil sands reclamation monitoring sites across northern Alberta. For plant identification, I used field guides, a hand lens, and a dissecting scope. I became familiar with Carex spp. and Salix spp. identification, in addition to many others. I processed samples for herbarium archive reference specimens. I also identified bryophyte samples to species from terrestrial sites across various ecoregions in Alberta using compound and… Show more I sorted, weighed, dried, and identified vascular plant samples from oil sands reclamation monitoring sites across northern Alberta. Aquatic Field Technologist
I collected environmental data from long-term monitoring sites in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic conditions. I used an inflatable kayak to access aquatic field sites, and collected bathymetry measurements (using a Garmin GPS to 1-2 degree accuracy on water), invertebrate samples, water chemistry samples and measurements (absorbance, turbidity, Quanta HydroLab), and conducted ecological classification of shoreline habitats. I established terrestrial sites by compass and GPS (Garmin, Trimble) (1-2 degree accuracy), and collected lichen and soil samples, as well as measured deadwood, tree height, and tree DBH. I accessed sites using trucks, a trailer, an ATV, and hiking. Show less
Community Support Worker
I referred community members to many services including housing, mental health, financial assistance, and indigenous ceremony and culture. I was responsible for the mental, physical, and emotional safety of community members while they were in the space. I was trained in conflict de-escalation strategies, as well as overdose response using Naloxone injection and inhalation kits.
Farming Apprentice
I assisted with organic microgreen and vegetable production. This included seeding, transplanting, weeding, watering, and harvesting. I also monitored the farm's soil microbiota and thermal compost pile (compound microscope, temperature probe). We produced sunflower and pea shoots, carrots, beets, potatoes, salad greens, fennel, rosemary, and squash.
Gardener
I provided gardening services to high-end clients in a solo and team environment. This included transplanting, pruning, clearing, watering, and weeding. I worked efficiently to meet short deadlines in outdoor conditions such as heat, wind, and light rain.
Tree Ring Lab Technician
I processed, assessed, and recorded hundreds of core samples from trees across northern Canada to determine their inner ring count and other dendrochronological characteristics. After mounting and sanding the samples using carpentry tools, I used CDendro and CooRecorder software to determine ring counts and ancillary data and input that to a database.
Graduate Research And Teaching Assistant
I studied in the Tank Lab of Aquatic Biogeochemistry and was a recipient of the NSERC Canadian Graduate Students - Master's Scholarship. I collaborated with scientists at BC’s Hakai Institute to study freshwater carbon dynamics in northern pacific coastal rainforest watersheds using in-situ stream chemistry sensors (fDOM, turbidity, pCO2). I calibrated the fDOM sensors to account for the effect of light absorbance by organic material on the sensor's fluorescence output. I calibrated the fDOM sensors to account for the effect of light absorbance by organic material on the sensor's fluorescence output. I managed a large dataset from multiple sensors in various watersheds over several years, and conducted multivariate statistical analysis on the dataset in the R programming language. I demonstrated the seasonality of stream DOM through an analysis of the trends in hysteresis between stream DOM and stream discharge. I also designed and took leadership in a field survey of aqueous stream greenhouse gases in the same remote watersheds. I managed a team of 3-5 staff and was responsible for their training and workflow in the field. I prepared gaseous samples using a pressure vacuum, and processed them using gas chromatography and infra-red spectroscopy. Finally, I worked as a Teaching Assistant for several courses in the Biological Sciences Department. I was responsible for lab instruction, marking, and holding office hours. Show less
Opportunistic Wetland Research Project Lead
I took leadership in a field research project on opportunistic wetland assessment and formation in reclaimed and natural landscapes. I designed a randomized field survey using satellite photos and DEM analysis in ArcGIS. I delineated and classified small wetland systems using provincial wetland assessment standards (Ontario and Alberta). Pollinator Research Assistant (Co-Op)
I designed a flowering hedgerow to plant around the perimeter of the farm’s property to support local, native pollinator species throughout the growing season. I conducted an observational study to investigate the farm’s flowering phenology and corresponding pollinator species. I monitored honey bees, various bumble bee species, other native bee species (i.e. mason, carpenter, sweat), and syrphid flies. I caught samples in small vials and froze them for identification.
