Developing and maintaining ontologies for data management in different domain fields.
The research project Development of the knowledge bases from empirical research datasets: ontological approach (EMPIRION) funded by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (project #20-07-00854, 2020-2022) was aimed to solve a problem of research data integration using ontologies. The resulting ontology is developed as a part of the existing ontological infrastructure for research data integration and is accompanied with a working prototype for the ontology population with real data. For the project's code and publications see attached links.
This independedvolunteer research project is performed by a group of researchers from different Russian institutions without any funding. The goal of the project is to examine the representations of sex and sexuality among adults over 18 years of age. My role was to develop a data management strategy and share the first dataset. Two main documents that were created are Data Management Plan and Data Use Agreement (in collaboration with a professional lawyer). See the link below for the resulting repository with all the mentioned materials.
Created an ontology for urban data management and participated in the creation of the ontological representation of St. Petersburg Land Use Rules and deployment of the triple store and public query endpoint. Technologies we used: OWL2, RDFS, SKOS, SPARQL, Virtuoso, Protege. Resulting ontologies available at GitHub. The development process and description of the Land Use Rules ontology can be found in our paper Modeling city land use with an ontology (see a link below).
Developed ontologies for industrial data management:- Selected an upper-level ontology (mostly worked with BFO, to a lesser extent with DOLCE and ISO15926).- Integrated and reused the core ontologies (QUDT, The Organisation Ontology, SKOS, etc.).- Designed ontological models for ф domain- and application-level data representation.- Prepared documentation for the models.
The Russian Foundation for Basic Research project #17-07-00228. The project was aimed to create a technology for ontology population and enrichment with heterogeneous data (i.e. data, stored in different sources: spreadsheets, databases, and XML documents). I created the ontology for tabular data sources and co-authored a final paper (published in a peer-reviewed journal).
Co-created the knowledge graph prototype for the automotive assembly units, activities included:- Top-down development of the ontology prototype based on the existing knowledge sources (standards, other ontological and non-ontological sources).- Bottom-up refinement of the ontology prototype using information about assembly units (primrily specifications from the suppliers' websites).- Improvement of the ontology prototype with domain experts' comments.- Formalisation and population of the resulted ontology using Web Protege editor.More detailed description of the graph and its development method can be found in the linked paper.
Saint Petersburg
Collaborated with the project principal investigator to manage the group work (I acted mostly as a project manager, and PI as a functional). The group consisted of 10 researchers worked on 3 main projects funded by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Foundation for Humanities. My responsibilities included:- Communication with stakeholders, both external (scientific research foundations and Saint Petersburg State University administration) and internal.- Managing the information resources (Google Drive, OSF, electronic notebook).- Improving the workflow: search for useful instruments and better practices.- Looking after the project's constraints: expected output, planned schedule, and budget.- Projects documentation.- Searching for new funding sources.- Taking part in research activities like working on experimental design, paper writing, and data collecting.Co-organizer of a popular science expo about illusions.Co-editor of the Cogito ergo: the site with information about cognitive psychology scientific conferences (currently deprecated). The work resulted in a set of lectures on lab management I gave, some manuals, and a peer-reviewed paper on research products organization.
