Most of my work centers around supporting and advising startup engineering organizations who are going through some sort of inflection point or experiencing growing pains.For startups that are just getting off the ground I provide support in hiring an initial engineering team, laying out engineering practices, and defining an architectural approach for the initial MVP.For startups that have found product/market fit I consult on how to adjust engineering practices and architecture in a post-MVP world where the software being built (and decisions being made!) will likely persist for a lot longer.I love working with engineering organizations that are starting to move past a single team and/or a single codebase. This is a key inflection point for any engineering org. Folks discover that what has been worked well in the past will likely not work so well in the future. I provide guidance on how to adjust engineering practices, SDLC and architecture to enable your teams and software to scale.I also provide training and mentorship for teams getting started with new technologies or engineering techniques. This support often has a focus on agile engineering practices - things like test automation and continuous delivery.I have been building software and leading teams for about 20 years, working in a wide range of tech stacks and industry verticals. I’ve worked at startups where I was the first engineer and advised engineering leadership at Fortune 500 companies.I am passionate about building pragmatic software and love helping teams learn how to deliver great work at a sustainable pace.

Oversaw a team building a micro-services-based web application with Scala, Play! 2.0 and DropWizard.Helped lead organization-wide agile transformation. Blazed the trail for a Continuous Delivery system using masterless puppet and .deb packages, now helping the rest of the engineering organization adopt the same approach.

Led a co-sourced team building a Rails e-commerce application. We were the green-field front to various existing systems. Lots of integration with existing systems; we didn't even have any persistence layer of our own. Continuous Delivery into a production environment within a few weeks, site went live after about 6 months.

Led a team developing a social media-sharing product, with a native iPad and desktop web interface. Our team was responsible for building the entire stack from ground up, using technologies including EC2, ThoughtWorks Go, neo4j, Padrino and backbone.js.

Consulted on test automation for a mobile web app using webdriver and cucumber to test against a variety of devices.

Led a team building two large iPad applications for consumer banking - checking balances, transferring funds, depositing checks via camera.Followed up by leading a team building a similar product as a single-page mobile web app. This pure-javascript app supported all the functionality provided by the corresponding native mobile apps, using the same APIs.Created and subsequently open-sourced Frank, an acceptance testing tool for iOS applications.

Pete worked as Tech Lead on several consumer-facing web applications in the online marketing space. Pete developed on various technology stacks but mainly worked with C# ASP.NET and Ruby on Rails. He drove the overall architecture of his products. This included developing a RESTful API to allow the integration of a Rails backend with an Adobe Flex RIA frontend. He also spearheaded a successful JMS-based integration with a legacy perl backend system. In addition to heading up his team's product implementation he also mentored junior engineers and was involved in various cross-product architecture initiatives. He also made contributions to various Flex-related open source projects.While at Lyris Pete also helped in the transformation of the engineering organization to a Scrum-based agile approach. This enabled his team to deliver new functionality to production every 3 weeks.
