SAWIP was established 10 years ago as an extension of the Washington-Ireland Programme for Service and Leadership. The programme currently recruits 20 high potential, diverse, emerging servant leaders from the Universities of Cape Town, Western Cape, Johannesburg, Stellenbosch and Pretoria into annual teams. Its purpose is to inspire, develop and support selected team members to strengthen their servant leader attributes and skills so that they can enhance their contributions to social cohesion, nation building and community development. Teams participate in a demanding 7 month curriculum which includes 6 weeks of cultural, global and work exposure in Washington DC during the winter vacation as well as individual and team projects in under-served communities.On successful graduation from the programme, team members join the active SAWIP community with the expectation that they will continue to contribute towards the goals and activities of SAWIP and help to sustain it.

Getting Africa thinking and talking: a platform for positive change:The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is South Africa’s premier research institute on international issues. As an independent, non-government think tank, we have a long and proud history of providing thought leadership in Africa. We are both a centre for research excellence and a home for stimulating public discussion.Our work spans social development, foreign policy, governance, the environment, and economic policy, linking local experiences with global debates. This body of African-generated knowledge provides local and regional decision-makers with independent, evidence-based options for Africa’s future development. All our findings are made available freely in the form of publications, policy briefs, videos, articles, workshops and conferences. We provide an open platform for the public to engage with these issues, and facilitate discussions between a wide variety of stakeholders. Our public outreach activities inspire students to take an interest in international affairs, and help develop their research and leadership skills.

The Peer Mentoring Programme is an initiative that started in 2005 which has now grown beyond expectations from its humble beginnings. The added benefit is its expansion into residences, as living and learning spaces and thus creating a platform for meaningful engagement and growth for students. It is as a result of the mentor-mentee relationship that this programme builds a strong interpersonal skills base for the benefit of the community geographic and otherwise. The reported success of the programme provides the confidence to sustain the intervention.At the UWC Peer Mentoring Programme we believe that everyone is a mentor and it is a philosophy we live by. The most important people in the programme are the first year students because it is the aim of the programme to improve the retention and throughput of first year students at the University of the Western Cape, an alignment with the IOP of the UWC.The UWC Peer Mentoring Programme therefore helps with the adjustment of first year students to university life and is guided by the following objectives: 1.To facilitate the transition on first year students into university; 2.To enhance throughput and retention; and3.To contribute towards the personal, academic and social development of students.In correlation with the objectives espoused above my duties as a mentor included:1. Providing resources for personal and academic growth via the office for student support2. Advising and providing academic resources3. Facilitating and Providing a platform for mentees to apply learned skills4. Assisting with professional exposure by forwarding opportunities

The MUN programme is an opportunity for learners from around the country to research and debate various international topics together, and learn how the United Nations and other international and regional bodies function. MUN is an important tool that allows learners to expand their world view. University students serve as tutors for participating schools, to ensure that all schools have a fair chance in the programme. In efforts to create more opportunities for learners and educators to be able to participate, SAIIA coordinates a series of Mini-MUN conferences inEastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape. Schools are encouraged to take part in at least one Mini-MUN conference, in order to better prepare for the large annual conference held in Johannesburg in September.
