Hi! I'm Bel. Before coming to college I never once thought of editing as a possible career, and within three weeks of class at Champlain, I was ready to commit to it as my specialization. After graduating, I'm looking forward to finding a permanent position at a publishing house where I can work with authors that way every day. From positions I've held in tutoring and news editing, I get a similar sense of gratification; for me, the joy of the job comes from focusing in on someone's piece, hearing them explain their vision for it, and then helping them bring the piece to that level. I recently got the amazing opportunity to live, study, and intern abroad in Dublin, Ireland. While there, I worked for Wordwell Books, a publishing house focused on celebrating Irish history and culture. Most of my work was journalistic writing for Wordwell's Books Ireland, the leading book news publication in the country. I interviewed incredible authors and artists on their recent or forthcoming books, wrote news pieces on the Dublin literary world, and got to experience working as part of a team in a small publishing house. Previously, I interned at Champlain's Emergent Media Center on a faculty fellowship project that worked closely with the school's student-run publications. There, I mixed editing skills and my love of designing a plan for someone who needs help and brought that into the world of marketing. I got to design three highly individual marketing plans suited to student publications' needs, and one joint marketing plan for all three, with the goal of broadening their audience and growing their staffs. When I'm not working, I'm probably playing bass or reading. A recent favourite book of mine was Roadside Picnic, by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky.
