Uvm Agroecology Extension Fellow
This summer I am an Agroecology Extension fellow with the University of Vermont. This 10-week research and outreach experience including leadership skills building and mentoring high school students in a science camp. The majority of my time is spent working in the Plant Genetic Heritage Lab under Eric Von Wettberg studying a perennial wheat crop called Kernza. This project started by the Land Institute and funded by the National Science Foundation has trials at many institutions across the country and is looking at the viability of this crop as a sustainable alternative to wheat due to its extensive root system that has the ability to sequester carbon into the soil and improve soil health. Through this experience, I am learning fieldwork skills, farm skills, data processing skills with Excel, and DNA extraction. At the end of the summer I will be making a scientific poster about our work and presenting it to the NSF.
Research Intern
Through the Plant Futures class at UC Berkeley, my group is partnered with Friends of The Earth to conduct research on the impacts of anaerobic digester technology on the emissions of the dairy industry in the US. Through our literature review and creation of a methane emissions calculator using Excel, using USDA and IPCC methodologies, we will extend industry recommendations and policy guidelines that align with our analysis for how this technology should be implemented in the future.
