About Isabella Brocato

Bella Brocato is a second-year MPH candidate at the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health in the Sociomedical Sciences Department with a certificate in Sexuality, Sexual and Reproductive Health. While at Columbia, Bella has served as an Overnight Helpline Advocate at Columbia's Sexual Violence Response and is a 2024 Menstrual Health Fellow at the Gender, Adolescent Transitions, and Environment (GATE) Program. Beginning in the fall, Bella will serve as the Program Coordinator and a Gender and Sexuality Educator at The School in New York City, and will continue working with GATE as a Research Assistant. Bella approaches sexual health through a life course and reproductive justice lens with embodiment, decoloniality, and intersectionality at the center.Bella graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and minors in English, Human Rights, and Women and Gender Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2022. After leading sexual assault prevention efforts at her undergraduate university, Bella recognized a deeper cultural failure that occurs at the onset of puberty and when we first begin to receive messages about sex. She became a certified puberty and adolescence educator in February 2023 to not only prevent negative sexual experiences, but to promote safe, healthy, and pleasurable experiences by developing a healthy relationship with one's body.

  • Mississippi Review
    Assistant Editor
    Mississippi Review Jan 2022 - May 2022
    Hattiesburg, Mississippi, United States
After being invited to enroll in Dr. Adam Clay's Introduction to Publishing graduate class, I was able to serve as an Assistant Editor for the Mississippi Review. As an Assistant Editor, I read through and voted on fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions with my peers, discussed each piece in depth with other editors, and assisted in the publishing process for the Summer 2022 issue. Mississippi Review was founded by Gordon Weaver in 1972 at the University of Southern Mississippi. Frederick Barthelme took over the editorial reigns in 1977 and along with managing editor Rie Fortenberry quickly turned Mississippi Review into a literary magazine of national acclaim. The duo ran Mississippi Review for over 30 years, consistently publishing issues that combined top-tier work with an innovative and eclectic design aesthetic. Raymond Carver, an early contributor to the magazine, once said that Mississippi Review "is one of the most remarkable and indispensable literary journals of our time." Well-known and established writers have appeared in the pages of the magazine, including Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners, as well as new and emerging writers who have gone on to publish books and to receive awards. MR is now in its fifth decade, and while adapting to this up-and-coming generation of writers and readers, the magazine continues to publish writing that is offbeat and ahead of the curve under the editorship of Adam Clay, its current editor-in-chief.
