Monteverde, Costa Rica

After graduating from Lake Forest College, the Grace E. Groner Foundation provided me with funds to go back to Costa Rica and conduct another internship, this one with lichens! The objective of this internship was to establish a lichen biomonitoring network in Monteverde to use lichens as indicators of contamination and changing climatic conditions.

Galapagos National Park

After I graduate from Lake Forest College, the Grace E. Groner foundation agreed to fund another internship abroad for me. We found a project by Wake Forest University that would challenge me in ways the tropical forest had not yet challenged me, so I traveled to Isla Española of the Galapagos Archipelago to assist in their study evaluating the reproductive biology of the Nazca Booby (Sula grantii).As part of this I was responsible as the daily monitor of 700 Booby nests. I collected individual reproductive data from each of them, including the dimensions of their eggs, incubation period, and parental role in incubation. Often this required handling adults to obtain their band numbers, traversing precarious cliff edges, and banding chicks!

Lake Forest, Illinois

As a biology student at Lake Forest College I have peer taught a couple courses on ecology and evolution, worked as a stockroom assistant setting up labs for other biology classes, and served as caretaker for guppies, siamese fighting fish, crayfish, and a very playful turtle.

Barro Colorado Island, Panamá

As an research assistant to a Cambridge Ph'D student on Barro Colorado Island, I assisted in the maintenance and harvest of a research project investigating the responses of mycorrhizae to nutrient additions and the knock-on effects for a plant that parasitizes with mycorrhizae! After the completion of the harvest, I helped design and conducted a research project on the adaptive value of mucilage produced by Guazuma ulmifolia seeds.

Monteverde, Costa Rica

I have had the pleasure to intern at the Monteverde Institute twice, the summers of 2013 and 2014. In my time there, I have been part of several research projects, one of which I designed.I designed and carried out an independent research project on the seed fate of Ocotea floribunda, which presented preliminary evidence for secondary seed dispersal in this species as well as photographic evidence of agoutis consuming and attempting to bury the seeds. I also marked and measured over 400 trees belonging to the Lauraceae family and used GPS to map and analyze how the spatial distribution and density of these species varies between primary and secondary forests. In another instance, I measured, retagged, and mapped over 1000 trees planted by the Fundación Conservacionista Costarricense (FCC) as part of the organization’s reforestation research project. And finally, I also conducted an independent research project on Myrcianthes “black fruit”, concluding with insight into this species' phenology and information on how seedlings of this species respond to fertilizer and maintenance, as a contribution to the Bellbird Biological Corridor Project.
