Gradually these shifted into full-on requests for advisory services. I've helped over a dozen companies with everything from just a few hours of phone conversations, to performing complete analyses of their finances and operations and providing professional recommendations and roadmaps to make improvements in their operations and strategy. Over the course of working with these companies, as well as those where I've taken on a long-term advisory role, I've learned that the patterns in business are very predictable. 1. Common sense is almost always right. Almost..... 2. Being kind is not a liability. It enhances sales ability, management ability, customer and other stakeholder management, and it helps with balance to maintain sustainability. 3. Finance doesn't create a successful business --- A good product or service does. Drive business success with innovation around the core offering, not with innovation around finances. 4. Technology stacks are changing rapidly. Product strategy needs to be built around core principals, not specific technology vendors' solutions. 5. Velocity of shipping product can make or break a company. It matters way less how far ahead or behind you are, than how fast you're going. With infinite time, velocity is all that matters. With short time, how far ahead matters more. But with decent capital and some runway, velocity matters more than where you're at. Develop fast dev loops, iterate, ship product quickly and get feedback. 6. Simplify! 7. Smile and laugh a lot! :)
