I began learning Java back in 2006, thanks to a high school teacher who suggested I make a career out of it. My initial response? “I don’t care if it pays well—I couldn’t do this mind-numbing work every day.” So, instead of diving straight into programming, I spent a decade in hardware, low-code, and solutions engineering roles, both professionally and personally.It wasn’t until I was reintroduced to programming through JavaScript that everything clicked. If I’d started with a scripted language, who knows how different my journey might’ve been. In 2017, I made the leap from Kentucky to New York City, a move that allowed me to fully transition into software development.Since then, I’ve immersed myself in React (web and native), Node/Express, TypeScript, and cloud databases like Aurora and MongoDB. Over time, I’ve expanded my toolkit to include AWS services, Java/Spring, and specialized databases like DynamoDB and PostGIS. While I still have mixed feelings about Java (despite using it daily now and appreciating its strengths), I’ve found incredible joy in bringing my holistic solutions background to engineering teams. The work is anything but mind-numbing.Outside of tech, I’m an airplane owner and pilot, musician, disc golfer, DIY home maintenance enthusiast, proud dad, supportive partner to a small business owner, and a reformed gamer.
