Our team began supporting 3rd party software (aDAM) for managing some of our image assets using C#. In 2015 we started a year-long Java project to create a custom enterprise level platform on AWS for managing digital assets.We then expanded our platforms capabilities to support the remaining images, metadata used to display the images, and improved the platform performance.Environment: AWS, Java, Spring, GitLab, DataDog, Splunk, New Relic, Jira• We designed our system to minimize latency for files requested by our CDN (Akamai)o Stored original files in S3, and recently upgraded the system to add commonly requested modifications of the files in S3o Stored metadata about our images, videos, and other files in DynamoDBo Used a Redis cache to further minimize latency• Hosted multiple Java services on Elastic Beanstalko Most of the services were written in Java with Spring for dependency injection• Increased test coverage of serviceso Substantially increased unit test coverage for libraries used by our serviceso Added integration tests to increase code coverage and prevent regressions• Used Cloud Formation for setting up, modifying, and tearing down infrastructureo Maintained and updated CF templates as needed for new infrastructureo We converted some of the services to use the Serverless framework so we could deploy DataDog/Splunk/New Relic dashboards after the Holiday sales period• Created an event system to send custom events to other teamso Used a kinesis stream to allow the system to store a larger volume of messages until they could be processedo Used Java lambdas to process and forward messages to multiple destinationso Added an API Gateway to allow a partner team to send related messages• Led our team migration from Bitbucket to GitLabo Migrated repositories and setup syncing until Bitbucket access was turned offo Setup GitLab pipelines to replace our old CI/CD system (GoCD)o Helped other team members get used to the new system
