Ben is a physician, writer, and multi-award winning documentary filmmaker. He is professor of family and community medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine where his projects range from medical/anthropological work among the Tsimane Indians of the Bolivian Amazon to attending physician at the University's chronic pain clinic. He is member of a World Health Organization research group on the treatment of low back pain.Ben has been a frequent contributing writer for the New York Times, and has written for The Atlantic, Undark, and Eclectica. His novel, Delivery, published by the University of New Mexico Press, was named to the best of the Southwest.His film work has been honored by, among many others: The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, The Ojai Film Festival, The American Film festival, The Taos Talking Picture Festival, The Global Roots Film Festival, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and Emmy nominations. His documentary films have been aired on PBS, and distributed by American Public Television. Recent documentaries aired on Public Television include: "The Sun Never Sets", about the Rio Grande Sun, a great weekly newspaper in New Mexico; "The Medicine in Marijuana", what we know and what we don't; Project ECHO: A Democracy of Knowledge, about one of the foremost health projects in the world; and Library Stories: Books on the Backroads, about rural libraries.
