Holiferm develops holistically improved fermentation technology for massive fermentation and downstream cost reductions.Holiferm is now focussed on bringing biosurfactants to market, first launching sophorolipids in its Honeysurf product line, available in high foam (Honeysurf HF) and low foam (Honeysurf LF) versions. Holiferm can now provide product at tonne scale and will be bringing 1ktonne capacity online over the next 18-24 months.

I am a PhD researcher in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Manchester, and have developed an industrially relevant integrated production and recovery system for sophorolipid, a glycolipid biosurfactant produced by C.bombicola, and have demonstrated this technology at pilot plant scale. I am now establishing industrial links to further develop this technology, and have filed a patent to protect this technology. During my PhD I have collaborated proactively, having initiated and completed collaborations with TU Delft and Croda Europe as well as several further projects I will shortly be beginning with both academic and industrial partners.I have presented my work at a number of conferences, including an oral presentation at ESBES 2016 and an invited talk at RRB13. I was selected as a UK representative for the global biotechnology gap summit 2014. I have given seminars on my work internationally, at The University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, and Makerere university in Kampala.

Applying my skills to understand unfamiliar scientific fields and propose novel solutions and identify critical information for prescouter clients. Projects based around sometimes unfamiliar fields, I have received a bonus in recognition of my excellent work.

Analysis of business from a variety of perspectives, identifying a number of areas for improvement. Design of heating and cooling systems that in some cases had to operate without electricity or running water and with minimal material for construction and budget. Working with local businesses, to find quotes for the systems I had designed, and present recommendations to the business. Work was conducted entirely alongside Ugandans, providing a valuable cross cultural work experience.

Spent 12 weeks from 17th June 2012 working in a vaccine production facility in Liverpool for Novartis, working in a team as a process engineer. Facilitated a multi-disciplinary risk assessment and implemented corrective action. Utilised the skills of external contractors as well as my own knowledge to identify the causes of a temperature issue with a ‘tray washer’, and designed a heat exchanger system to correct this problem. Gained a more practical understanding of process operation, following PID diagrams around the physical plant to improve knowledge of systems with little formal documentation. Set projects completed ahead of time, requesting and making significant progress on additional work.
