About Ben Drummond
I grew up wanting to be a professional athlete. Just ask my parents, with their encouragement I was involved in almost every sport possible. They would drive me to all training sessions, matches and tournaments that I was involved in, especially football. It didn’t take too long to realise that my right foot needed to be more than just for standing for me to make that dream reality. I was lucky to live in a street not too far from the local golf course and most kids in the street were all golfers. As you can imagine the competitiveness between us all was high and that has never really left me. Growing up in a north east town with most people being involved in the oil and gas industry, I was adamant that I would not be drawn into it. I followed my older brother down to Edinburgh for university with the view that I was going to graduate with my management degree and join any other industry. However, coming home at weekends to work with my friends in a local pub and meeting my future wife just as a finished university, I found myself looking for work in Aberdeen and predominately in the oil and gas. As I finished university the industry took a turn for the worse and jobs were scarce to come across. I helped my father’s business when I help to cover for a staff member being on maternity leave and before I knew it, I had been there for several years. It shouldn’t have been a shock as I had worked with the company throughout my later school years and during all breaks from university. I knew the company like the back of my hand, and it was an obvious choice. I have always enjoyed getting away on a nice holiday. That can be anything from a long weekend away with my family in St Andrews (not a surprise with my passion of golf) or on a nice chilled out beach holiday. I have been very fortunate to have been on holidays in America, Europe, mainly city breaks and the Middle East, but nothing has compared to the Caribbean. Something you might find strange for a pale skinned red head who needs factor 100 on. It has to be the most chilled place!Nothing beats spending time with loved ones. Most of my downtime is spent with my wife, family and friends, whether meeting for food and drinks or just having a catch up over a coffee. Most Saturdays are spent on the golf course which is my way of switching off from work. I also enjoy my football and will do my best to get to games when I can. That’s just a little something about myself, it would be great to hear something interesting about you.
Listed skills include Oil/Gas, Petroleum, Procurement, Oil And Gas, and 14 others.

Who would have thought my next challenge would be with renting equipment painted blue. I certainly didn’t, but it was an opportunity that I couldn’t say no to. I had a lot to learn, after 10 years of the same product and clients, this was something completely different and the client contacts were new. The team gave me the time and opportunity to learn what we can offer and to this day I am still learning of new ways in which the company can help provide solutions to the industry. This was a challenge that wasn’t going to be a quick win. Not all winches are the same and the projects are not just lifting, pulling and deploying activities. I began working in the local market and it was a great place to build relationships and knowledge of how ACE can help the industry. I thought I knew a lot about the industry but that was not the case. In the short time that I have been with the company it has been very rewarding, I have built relationships with the client base and showcased how ACE can be their trusted partner. I still strive for new challenges and I have been given one with recently being allocated the Asia Pacific region along with the Renewables sector to look after. Both areas are a hive of activity and I can’t wait to see how they develop. Let’s just hope I can travel into the region soon start building some key client relationships and help ACE be seen as the go to solution provider.
Sales Manager
I was asked if I would like to take on the role of Sales Manager for the company on the back of the directors seeing how I could deal with good and bad situations during my role as Quality Manager. I must admit it wasn’t a role I had ever been interested in and always seen a transition into a more operational role. To be honest I wasn’t always sure I would be taken serious as a young person coming in and trying to build a relationship with a client. What I didn’t know was how much I knew about the market and our equipment. I was very surprised at how natural it came and how I enjoyed the buss of meeting new clients and challenges. I was very quickly seen as the go to person and began to become the contract managers for our long-term clients. The relationships led to contract renewals and increase in the volume of work. I always felt that we could make the process of hiring equipment easier for the client and with that, help the client to win more contracts based on the models we had worked together to benefit both companies. I was always up for a new challenge and that came in the form of new products lines and markets as the company changed. The hunger for a new challenge grew and I felt it was time to get some new experiences, little did I know that I would continue with equipment painted blue.
Quality Manager
I have always been one for looking into the detail of how a job is completed from start to finish and if there is a way in which we could do better. Therefore, I was happy to jump into the role of Quality Manager. I had to help the company gain its certification to industry standards and to look into the procedures and processes to find how to do things, smarter, quicker and better. Having worked in the yard and the office I was seen as being the one who would take both sides into consideration. This played perfectly into my people skills and gave me experience of working as a leader of a team to achieve an end goal to suit everyone. This also helped to make myself disciplined and structured in how I set out my working week. I still use these attributes today but instead of internal stakeholders, its mainly external stakeholders. The confidence in my ability certainly grew in this role and this would lead into my role and career taking an unexpected change in direction.
Rental Coordinator
This was the job that started my life in the world of full-time employment. It wasn’t too harsh of a step as I had been working with the company for several years during holidays from school and university. This role consisted of working directly with clients as I had to be the point of contact for all rental projects. This helped my development of being able to cope in a demanding industry. The need for quick responses and excellence in product offering was always at the top of the agenda and I always looked on how to do better. This may have been the reason I was asked to move into my next role in the company.
Bartender
I started working at one of the local hotels as soon as I turned 18. This was a great place to work as it was with my friends and it was just a laugh from the start. Don’t get me wrong it was hard going sometimes, I even had to stand my hand being a waiter during weddings and functions. The highlight was always working in the main bar and during the Christmas parties. Working in the hospitality service was an eye opener and started my real first interaction with ‘clients’. You always had to be up for a conversation whether they made sense or not. This definitely helped with dealing with difficult situations and difference of opinions. I knew it was time to move on from the pub when we all started full time work. The lure of enjoying a few drinks after a long week instead of serving them was too much to turn down. Mind you my friends and I always say we should do it again one day.
