I grew up on a family wine farm between Worcester and Ceres. From a young age, I have always been fascinated by the art of problem-solving and optimisation. As the eldest son on a family farm that dates back five generations, everyone would have expected me to become a farmer. But from as far back as I can remember, I knew I wanted to be an engineer.I am a problem solver at heart and have always been drawn to finding solutions to complex challenges. As a professional, I have honed my skills in optimisation and enjoy the process of identifying ways to make systems and processes more efficient and effective.In addition to my passion for problem-solving, I love spending time outdoors. Engineering TraineeSola Synergi (Pty) Ltd Feb 2022 - Mar 2022Brackenfell, Cape Town, South AfricaI got to see the design part of every installation as well as do site visits with potential customers. During my time at the company, they were in the process of bidding for three large-scale projects for Pepkor that were all over a megawatt in size. During my time at the company, I learnt so much about what goes into bidding for a project. We normally started off with a site visit to look at the roof structure and the space available to install solar panels. We would then carefully read through the bidding documents and requirements provided by the consulting engineering firm. After that we would start designing the installation in software called helioscope. Helioscope is advanced software that can run simulations on efficiency as well as estimations of annual output based on previous weather data for that exact location. After the design is finalised, it will go to the financial department, where the final project cost is calculated. The company also provides a return on investment calculations to show the client how long the project will take to pay off the price of installation through savings on the electricity bill.During my time at Solar Synergi, I really expanded my technical skills and knowledge of renewable energy, and I am looking forward to work in that industry one day. -

Gained a much better understanding of the installation process of solar panels. Doing the physical installation helped me identify the shortcomings the engineer sitting in the office did not take into account. Now knowing what works in practice will greatly increase the installation efficiency of solar designs I make in the future. -

An alternative solution was investigated including reactivation through high-temperature exposure as well as using the activated carbon in compost to increase the water-holding capacity. Activated carbon is a carbonaceous adsorbent with a high internal porosity, and hence a large internal surface area. Commercial activated carbon can have a surface area of up to 2000 m2/g making it one of the substances with the best water-holding capabilities.
