I began a career in law enforcement as a Reserve Deputy with the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office in 2000 and was hired as a Police Officer for the University of Montana in 2003. In 2013, I was promoted to Police Captain where I served as Assistant Chief, Special Events Coordinator, and managed daily police operations. As Captain, I also led UMPD’s efforts in creating policy and training standards on trauma informed, and victim centered response to sexual assault. A program that now serves as a blueprint for University Police Departments nationwide. At the time of retirement, I served as the University of Montana’s Jean Clery Act Compliance Officer, and Chief UMPD Instructor for Immediate Response to an Armed Intruder.I spent a large part of my law enforcement career teaching front line personnel how to defend themselves during a violent encounter while waiting for help from police or security. Based on my experience with traditional OC (pepper) spray, I was skeptical and hesitant to endorse any self-defense spray. My skepticism eventually resulted in volunteering to be sprayed with Reflex Protect to see for myself if it is in fact different. The effects of Reflex Protect surprised me. I found that it is far "better" than anything I had used in my career in law enforcement. The painful debilitating effects of the spray were immediate, and in a room full of other people, I was the only person affected. After that experience, I realized Reflex Protect is the best option to stop a violent encounter and will save lives. I began working with Reflex Protect to develop model policies and training in early 2018. In February of 2019 I came to work full time at Reflex Protect as the Director of Government Sales.
