About Ben Hofstra

I am a project engineer at a general contractor that specializes in multifamily construction and earthwork in Glenwood Springs, CO. Throughout a project lifecycle, I work closely with the company executives, city representatives, superintendents, foremen, trade partners, and clients. I optimize project health by encouraging collaboration and effective communication between contributors and stakeholders. I also manage schedules, estimate projects to create and manage budgets, document project progress, and perform regular quality control checks and scope assessments. I manage a wide range of projects from custom, luxury duplex construction to large scale commercial earthwork.I graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a BS in Integrated Design Engineering in May 2023. I minored in engineering management and engineering entrepreneurship. The curriculum gave me a unique opportunity to study mechanical engineering through applied projects. I discovered a passion for project management which led me to my current position, where I continue to learn every day. My recent passion project at work has been to develop enterprise resource planning solutions, which include inventory and document management systems. Microsoft's Power Platform has such broad capabilities that finding an optimal solution for our use case has been uniquely challenging. In my free time, I am an avid reader. My recent favorites are How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie, and Ultralearning, by Scott Young. I am also a fitness enthusiast, and nothing pairs better with gym time than a good podcast. My current favorites are real estate investment podcasts, including the Better Life and Bigger Pockets podcasts.

Research Assistant

Boulder, Colorado, United States

As a research assistant for the University of Colorado Boulder Aerospace Department, I had three main roles. The first was to create an instructional slideshow for research subjects that would be participating in the study. The second was to learn to operate the tilt translation sled, which is essentially a large box on a set of rails with a chair inside that can rotate. The sled can simulate the acceleration felt when flying a plane. Finally, I designed and built hardware to be used inside of the tilt translation sled. The hardware, built primarily from aluminum 40x40 extrusions, allowed for a steering wheel to be easily mounted and removed from inside the tilt translation sled.

I ran an extensive series of computational models by modifying a Fortran script. I then recorded the data gathered from the trials and contributed to writing a research paper that documented and analyzed the results. The purpose of the experiment was to determine how fluid droplets behave in differently shaped channels. I also consumed multiple research papers on similar topics in order to become familiar with the subject matter. Much of the work that I did was independent and with minimal guidance from my advisor.
