About Ben Hogan

I completed my PhD in 2005 investigating the genetic control of blood development using the zebrafish. In 2006, I moved to the Hubrecht Institute in the Netherlands as an EMBO and then NHMRC Australia CJ Martin fellow. There we applied large-scale zebrafish forward genetic screening to the study of lymphatic vascular development for the first time. We discovered Ccbe1, later found to be responsible for lymphatic dysplasia and lymphoedema in humans with Hennekam Syndrome. In 2010, I returned to Australia as a group leader at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Brisbane. My lab utilizes high throughput genetic approaches as well as in vivo cell biology to understand how lymphatic vessels form during embryonic development and in disease models. My work is funded by the NHMRC, Cancer Council and ARC Australia and our recent discoveries have uncovered novel mechanisms that regulate the formation of the vertebrate vasculature.
