Profile bio

About Ben Macconnell

I have worked for over 25 years in three primary roles: (1) organizing to build people power organizations for greater social and economic justice, (2) grassroots advocacy to press for leadership and policy reforms on environmental issues, and (3) human resources/talent acquisition to recruit and training those entering the field of community organizing. In these roles, I have worked at the local, state, national, and international levels. My community organizing and advocacy career has used a range of strategies to acquire evidence-based policy reform on a wide range of racial, economic, and environmental justice campaigns including: direct and grassroots lobbying, mass people actions, litigation, corporate partnerships, civil disobedience, alliance building, and media engagement. This has resulted in criminal justice reform, restorative justice in schools, increased mental health services, public investment in affordable housing, housing first policies, violent crime, and others.I have built a total of six independent 501(c)(3) self-sustaining, non-profit, community organizing groups from scratch; raised over 6 million in funding from businesses, individuals, and foundations to support these organizations; recruited hand-on, citizen-led board of directors and staff.I have also created a system for identifying, recruiting, screening, hiring and training over 100 professional organizers and community leaders through the DART Center's Organizers Institute. Finally, I am also a father and husband in a family that has fostered many teenage boys - adopting two - who continue to show me the power of resilience.

Listed skills include Community Organizing, Volunteer Management, Community Outreach, Nonprofits, and 8 others.
