Starting from the summer of 2009, I have worked for the Greater Burlington YMCA, as a substitute counselor for after school programs and the summer day camp. I have also worked for the last five years at the summer camp located in North Hero, VT, the YMCA Camp Abnaki.As a substitute counselor, I am responsible for the safety of the children, as well as ensuring that they have a range of activities to choose from, from arts and crafts to sports throughout the daily schedule. At Camp Abnaki, I am responsible for being a leader and a role model for everyone in the entire camp. I receive a group of campers each session (age varies) and along with a co-counselor, ensure that their one or two weeks is full of fun and yet incorporate the four core values of the camp; responsibility, respect, honesty and caring. For that session, I work with the group of campers 24/7, and take on responsibilities like waking them up, making sure they get proper nutrition, etc.When I am not working directly with my own group of campers, I teach skill classes that can range from water activities like Swimming and Canoeing to land sports like Basketball and Soccer. If I am not the class leader, I work as an assistant and provide as much help as I can to the class leader and take over when the class leader is absent.
