I grew up on a farm in rural New Zealand, spending my time either kicking a rugby ball or tinkering with farm equipment, inventing tools, and creating toys to make things work better—or just for fun.After graduating from Massey University in 1983 with a business degree, I worked for three years in an export trading company to save money for travel. In 1986, I bought a one-way ticket to London but stopped in Bali for a two-month break, and ended up staying, I never made it to London. Instead, I started making jewellery in the traditional Balinese style, which led to the founding of PT Kapit MasInitially, we focused on handcrafted pieces made by skilled Balinese and Javanese silversmiths. However, I soon realized that to meet the growing demands of the global market, we needed to embrace modern production methods. This led to the development of Kapit Mas, where we introduced advanced jewellery technology, machinery, and equipment, alongside traditional craftsmanship.Today, we are leaders in jewellery technology in Indonesia. Through our sister company, PT Balinusa Mitra Perkasa, we import and distribute supplies and technology from countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and the USA. We also provide technical support and service to manufacturers across Bali and Indonesia. By helping other Indonesian companies improve their jewellery production, we contribute to the industry’s overall growth.Our success in this area has also allowed us to expand into importing and distributing equipment and materials for other industries. Our focus is always driven by the benefit we can provide to others, We don’t know the people who wear jewellery that we make, but if they get joy from these creations, than that is good for our customers and ultimately therefore us. Its roots trace back to the 1880s, when my great-grandfather founded a company in Tairāwhiti, Gisborne, New Zealand. This company specialized in brokering and scouring wool produced by local farmers, and it became one of New Zealand's longest-running businesses. Today, it remains family-owned and operated.Over the past few decades, traditional markets for strong wool have declined significantly, prompting a need for innovation. In response, Wisewool was born. The current owners have invested in creating cutting-edge wool products for non-traditional markets, including bedding and furniture.
