I was born and currently live on Vancouver Island on the territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən people, today known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. I have an M.Sc. in coastal geography from the University of Victoria. My research involved developing a novel deep-learning-based image classification tool to improve the DFO monitoring framework for recreational salmon fisheries in BC. My current role for the province of BC involves co-developing marine strategic policy and protected area plans with coastal First Nations. I am also an avid kayak instructor, outdoor guide, and commercial skipper, passionate about both introducing people to ocean paddling for the first time and teaching experienced paddlers higher-level paddling and navigation skills in dynamic and challenging open ocean conditions.
