My strongest attribute is being able to comprehend complicated engineering situations while also having the personality to discuss them with people from all types of backgrounds.I have been an Applications Engineer/Sales Engineer for ~10 years working concurrently in two very different business units - pistons for internal combustion engines and bushings for all types of applications. The tactics required to be successful in these two types of industries are very different and I have had success in each. Inside the piston business unit, there is a specific set of customers and the project development timeline is very long (~3 years). During this time, there are many issues that arise regarding requirements from customers that need to be accommodated. For example, in many cases, the customer is asking for many different styles of critical features because they are unsure which would be most efficient and then they ask for quick prototypes to test each style. My job has been to keep my specific customer pleased with our ability to adapt while trying to balance our company resources (i.e. design, sales, and manufacturing) across all customers. Inside the bearings business unit, I was brought on when we were first expanding into the North American market. We had to use our knowledge of our product and manufacturing capabilities to convince customers across many industries of our ability to provide a product that is superior to their current product at a fair price. This type of sales requires many meetings with potential customers to quickly build relationships and establish a base of trust. Since these customers were across many industries, their need for our bushing materials varied greatly, so we had to be able to think quickly during these sales meetings to make sure we were accommodating their specific needs.
