Phd Candidate
Conducting research in the areas of salmon welfare and marine cage design. Supervised by Dr Trevor Telfer and Prof James F Turnbull. During the four years of my PhD I have been responsible for the development, direction and resources of my own research. By my own design, all of the research has been conducted on commercial Atlantic salmon farms of varying scale and complexity. My knowledge of farm operations, management and monitoring systems, has benefited tremendously from this exposure. The basis of my PhD has involved frequent personal interactions with a variety of people from civil servants to manual workers and as such a diplomatic approach was essential in the successful outcome of the project. The project required the development of novel techniques to assess the fluctuations in the cage environment and attributed effects on fish welfare. Data loggers were used in conjunction with pressure sensors (to measure cage deformation), dissolved oxygen probes, current meters and underwater camera equipment. The loggers were able to collect data over extended time periods allowing me to document the change in environmental conditions with seasonal fluctuations in net fouling. The topics my PhD dealt with have applicability extending far beyond the limited scope of my project, with fish welfare becoming an ever more prominent issue within Scotland and Europe as a whole.
Msc (Hons) Aquaculture And The Environment
Aquaculture and and environmental survey modules. Honours project looked at the effect of non-native salmonids on native fish fauna in Chile and the Falkland Islands. Part of a Darwin project in Chile, supervised by Dr Carlos Garcia De Leaniz.During my 4 week stay in Puerto Montt, I was taught electro-fishing, fish identification and techniques used to assess species abundance, niche/resource overlap and categorise river habitats. I then implemented these techniques over a 2 month period on the Falkland Islands, where I was responsible for a team of 3 researchers. It was my responsibility to select sites, collect data and manage my own resources. The experience gave me confidence in my own abilities as a research scientist, project manager and team leader. My thesis is published on the project website and my data has been used in a number of recent publications (http://www.biodiversity.cl/panel/library/arch/e8783_Ben%20Perry.pdf).
