Greenhouse Gas Strategy Manager
Product Planning Manager - European On-Highway
Combustion, Performance And Emissions - Calibration Development, Technical Specialist
Immediately after my promotion to Technical Specialist my manager and System Performance Integration (SPI) leader for the NS6 project (see my Senior Engineer entry for more details) moved to another team. As a result I inherited two direct reports (Graduate Engineers) and the SPI lead responsibilities from him. This all came shortly before the product launched and we were pushing to complete the remaining tasks.I was also made the SPI lead and Assistant Technical Project Leader (aTPL) for a new project in the industrial sector. This was to provide a tailored product to a very valuable new customer who we needed to impress. Within a year my responsibilities had become much broader, the key to success during this time was both identifying tasks to delegate but also doing so effectively. I am lucky to have a very strong team but I think their success can also be attributed to my leadership. My team feel engaged, appreciated and bought in to the success of the product with enough context to make the right decisions without getting bogged down in the stresses of the project.Through this industrial project I've had significantly more communication directly with the customer. The customer is a fantastic, engineering led, company which has made this a pleasure. As well as being exposed to the customer more, through my role as aTPL I've also been exposed to the project leadership team more. I've presented in gateway reviews, met with regional leaders, the project sponsor, Chief Engineer.
Combustion, Performance And Emissions - Calibration Development, Senior Engineer
Whilst a Senior Engineer in the CPE team I was CPE lead for a reasonably small project (taking an existing engine and applying an aftertreatment that had been used on other application to it). The main challenge with this project was that the on site engine test cells were undergoing an upgrade so the development work had to be conducted at a consultancy in Germany. Working remotely was a challenge, but one we overcame along with our colleagues in Germany. This product has now been in the field for a couple of years and at the time of writing (2020) hasn't had any significant warranty issues related to the calibration, a testament to the quality of the calibration development by me and the rest of the team.I was also CPE lead for a much larger project, making a new product to meet the Chinese NS6 regulations. This project was very challenging from a communication stand point. There were parallel projects running in China, India and the US with which we shared knowledge, in addition we had semi-internal customers through our joint ventures. I made a great many contacts through this project and fostered relationships with engineers around the world. The NS6 introduction date was pulled forward by a year around half way through the project which changed the dynamic, suddenly we went from being on time to having a mountain to climb! As a team (within CPE at Darlington, cross functionally and in combination with the teams around the world) we pushed forward, introduced the product on time and with remarkably good reliability.
Combustion, Performance And Emissions - Calibration Development Engineer
During my time as an Engineer in the CPE team I managed the field test data analysis of a fleet of trucks. I chaired a weekly update meeting with internal stakeholders where I shared my findings and assigned/tracked actions. I also acted as a CPE/Test Engineer for emissions certification testing, a task which requires flexible working, strong attention to detail and a focus on data quality.
Test Engineering - Graduate Test Engineer
As a Test Engineer I was responsible for test execution, my key priorities were; data quality, test progress against plan, sourcing unique test hardware and communication between testing customer and Test Operation Technicians.
Assistant
Responsible for downloading data from the car (datalogger and ECU) and checking the health of the engine, submitting engine report to Radical Performance Engines. Control of race weekend data, including recording car set-up, monitoring fuel consumption and deciding on fuel load for each session. Active participant in car set-up decisions with both professional and gentleman (customer) driver and team principle despite no formal training in car set up I brought an analytical input to set up decisions. Reviewed driver data and shared learning with drivers. Troubleshoot car issues with a particular focus on electrical or powertrain issues.Man the twitter feed https://twitter.com/teammectech, catering, fetching tyres/tools from the lorry, seeing the car out of the garage, pit board and timing, jacking the car up, remove and refit wheels, clean the car between sessions, remove and refit bodywork, set up and pack away etc
Vacation Intern
I was part of the Powertrain Development Business team, helping to estimate the amount of resource (in terms of man hours and dollars budget) for each program, deploying this and communicating with engineering and finance teams. This really put my engineering knowledge into a business context and allowed me to improve my soft skills.
