Ben Utter is a writer, scholar, and educator with a passion for using the knowledge and skills of higher learning to help real people in their everyday lives. In addition to undergraduate literature courses, Ben’s broad teaching background includes leading creative writing workshops for university students in China, helping middle-schoolers with reading and study skills, and heading a community outreach program that brought research to life inside the classrooms of underserved students in Minneapolis schools.Before beginning his PhD at the University of Minnesota, Ben worked in a variety of industries including radio broadcasting, advertising sales, and media production. Along with his wife, a primary care physician, he also served on the board of a non-profit organization coordinating with Ghanaian nationals to build healthcare infrastructure in their home villages.Ben’s scholarly research focuses on the cultural and artistic interrelation between belief systems and narrative. He champions the importance of the humanities in professional development, and his advocacy interests include international and special-needs adoption. To all of these endeavors he brings his fascination with people and the stories they tell--both about themselves and to themselves.
