Ict Consultant - Server Infrastructure
Systems And Servers Architect
Following the closure of KMHIS I am now in the role of Systems and Servers Architect for MTW. I have a team currently of 3 people who are responsible for the server infrastructure at 2 acute hospitals, Maidstone General Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital.Managing the team and assisting in day to day issues when required is part of my role however at the moment my primary focus is on ensuring the infrastructure we have is stable and providing the best possible service to support the trust in delivering excellent patient care. I will strive to improve the infrastructure in ways to allow the trust to continue and hopefully improve on the excellent services already provided.
Technical Resource Team Leader
Our organisation went through a restructure whereby 3 business units were created. During this process I applied for and was successful in obtaining the role in the Consultancy Services business unit which focuses on generating revenue by carrying out project work for the various NHS trusts we support. As part of my job role I manage a team of 5 technical people including Infrastructure, Systems and Desktops. I ensure that as project work comes in, it is assigned to an appropriate member of the team, taking on work myself to ensure that workloads are balanced and that the tight deadlines we work to are met. I work with Enterprise Architects within my business unit to ensure that the work being done is meeting requirements and deadlines are being met. I also work with our day to day operational support teams in our Customer Support Centre business unit to ensure that once project work is completed, it is handed over to them for day to day BAU support. This role has allowed me to work on projects such as:* VMware upgrades on ESX clusters at 2 hospitals for an acute trust on Cisco UCS hardware.* Migration of users, data and applications from one trust to another as part of a clinical service transition.* Implementation of a Kent wide Chemotherapy Electronic Reporting System which required Citrix, SQL and application servers to be built and configured. This system is utilized by 4 acute trusts in Kent each with their own Active Directories so integration for this was required to ensure ease of access for the end users.* Various clinical application upgrades and implementations which require a lot of work with 3rd party suppliers to ensure the work goes smoothly and within the small time frames we are given due to the affect on clinical services.* Assisting in a complete infrastructure refresh project whereby all server, SAN and networking equipment was replaced with a new vendor's hardware. My involvement was with the SAN and servers.
Systems Team Leader
This role was the next logical progression for me within the organisation as at the time there were no more technically responsible job roles available.I managed a team of 11 technical systems support engineers varying from junior engineers all the way through to system specific technical specialists. My team were responsible for managing all systems support calls that were logged for NHS trusts in the West area of Kent (4 trusts including 1 acute). The team were also responsible for delivering various pieces of project work as and when they came in. It was my responsibility to ensure that calls were being completed as per each trusts SLA as well as making sure project work was being completed to the required standards and tight deadlines.I would also attend customer meetings on a monthly basis to discuss any issues or concerns they may have as well as to discuss how they would like to take their IT infrastructure going forward. This allowed me to have input into the design of any projects or hardware refresh work to ensure it would fit into their current infrastructure.I was part of a Kent wide Change Advisory Board (CAB) whereby I would review any technical changes being made to the IT infrastructures across Kent, ensuring that work being carried out would not put anything at risk and would be done in a controlled manner.I was also part of a Kent wide security group where we would regularly meet to discuss topics such as Anti-Virus and Security patches. We would ensure that decisions being made for individual customers would not have a negative effect on other customers as they were all connected via a Kent wide network, the COIN (Community of Interest Network).
Senior Systems Engineer
During my time in this role I was part of a team that supported 5 NHS trusts including 2 acutes. As a team we were also involved in the design, implementation and ongoing support of various standard and custom clinical applications. I supported 5 2003 Active Directory domains all with MS Exchange 2003, variations of SQL from 2000 through to 2008 and some basic support of Citrix. I was part of a small team responsible for the upgrade of an NT4 domain to a 2003 Active Directory domain as well as a migration from a Novell domain to an Active Directory domain, both for acute trusts which resulted in tight deadlines and high pressure environments. I have implemented multiple Symantec NetBackup solutions and gone on to manage them on a daily basis. All trusts I supported had VMware ESX environments of which I implemented one ESX cluster. I have also implemented and managed EMC Clariion SANs and have working knowledge of NetApp Filers.I would also be involved in project work which ensured I had a good balance of BAU support as well as new system implementations and in place upgrades.
