Profile bio

About Ben Williams

I’m a PhD student at UCL and ZSL supported by the Fisheries Society of the British Isles 🐠 I’m proud to be undertaking this with my industry partner Mars who operate the worlds largest reef restoration program: buildingcoral.com 🪸My research focuses on ways we can support coral reef conservation and restoration using AI. This has included work using acoustics to track restoration, which won the prestigious NetExplo award for the worlds best innovation in digital tech for sustainability in 2022 🥇I am now taking this method across the tropics and have used similar approaches to develop a detection system for destructive blast fishing. Alongside leveraging my data-science skills, my research also involves extensive fieldwork, primarily in Indonesia 🇮🇩🤿 My research has featured extensively in A-list media outlets including, news articles, radio appearances and podcasts 🎙️In 2023, I was fortunate to propose and become the first of many reef restoration interns with @Mars where I worked for 6 months as a science officer. Later in 2023 I also undertook a 3 month PhD Student Researcher position at Google Deepmind in San Francisco as part of DeepMinds Perch bioacoustic effort 🧠

Listed skills include Presentation Skills, Field Work, Statistical Data Analysis, Analytical Skills, and 14 others.
