Building a career in both education and business has given me the opportunity to learn and grow with some of the smartest people in the world. I have always loved the diverse challenge of bringing what I know as an education consultant to what I know as an entrepreneur and vice versa, initiating and growing new ideas as a way of life.In both areas, I prefer working alongside those who possess a complementary skill set to my own. I have formed businesses, acted as a consultant, and co-authored books with the likes of Art Costa, Jeff Colosimo, Heidi Hayes Jacobs, and Allison Zmuda. Collaboration has been a benefit to me, giving me firsthand experience with what I also believe is important for organizations: a way to share the thinking, weather turbulence of uncertainty, and learn to make critical decisions together.My career began in the 1960s with open education. I helped start a teachers’ center and a children’s museum, quickly becoming known for developing thinking. I got hooked onto the thinking movement of the 1980s and started working with Art Costa, who I have collaborated with for more than 30 years. It’s when I left the teachers’ center and children’s museum that I began consulting and my career in education has grown from there.Throughout my 50-plus years in education, a lot has changed while – at the same time – the direction that I have always believed in has not changed at all. In many ways, there is a classical touch to contemporary ideas. The big difference is that there is more research and understanding from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and access to more information that can enhance and inform projects.
